Re: OSRM answers copyright question, sort of (2.23 / 17) (#48)
by Potential Recruit on Sun Nov 14th, 2004 at 04:48:35 EST
"Are we just completely out of our minds with paranoia?"

No you are just amazingly stupid. Let me illustrate exactly how stupid you are.

"My impression is that OSRM wants us to believe that they are some sort of angel investor in the future of linux.  Are they, or aren't they?"

They are. Any company that invests in linux is an angel. They contribute by funding grokline. Some companies do more, some companies do less. SCO and MS tries to destroy linux and open source. OSRM are in the "angel" quadrant of that scale.

"My fear is that any non-commercially supported open source project will soon be impossible to run, since no one will use it do to a lack of indemnification."

That's an irrational fear. So far only one company has brought forth suits and they have only sued their customers and partners. The lesson is not to deal with litigious companies.

" Say bye bye to apache, unless they happen to have deep pocketed protectors.  Say bye bye to everything sponsored by GNU."

Why sue Apache? What would you expect to get? Are you going to collect a billion dollars in damages?

Maybe you are talking about some bizaare scenario under which somebody gets sued for USING apache. IS that right?  If so then it would not effect any of the projects on freshmeat. Unless you are going to sue the developers they are not going to stop development.

Also apparently you have never heard of the FSF. The FSF will defend GNU and most likely would also defend apache.

finally if the community is attacked it will innovate a solution. Just like groklaw sprang out of nowhere and slammed SCO something will spring up and slam anybody who is suing GNU.

'The disconnect, for me, is the fundamental conflict of interest between OSRM and grokline."

There is no conflict of interest. Get over it. Grokline is good for OSRM. That's why they sponsor it. The collects facts that may be used in case OSRM goes to court.

"It does not make sense that they are doing what they say."

It does not make sense to you. That's because you are dense.

'Funding projects to destroy their own business model."

You don't understand their business model.

" And why is the fight only directed at EU laws?"

It's not. You again misunderstand. Also you are unaware that the EU is discussion right now whether to accept a US style IP patent system. You are confusing pleadings to EU to pay attention with the purpose of the site.

"Why not start in the United States?"

Start what?

"If Perens is truly convinced OSRM is good for open source, I would like to hear the same pitch that convinced him."

Yes I'll get right on that. You are after all the most important person on the face of the planet. everybody should drop what they are doing and make sure you are on board.

"And why has the entire open source community allowed their most important fight to be coopted by a commercial interest?"

it hasn't. You are dumb. You don't understand what is going on. A web site that exists to collect facts is good for the community. If it also benefits commercial interests then whoo hoo. Only the most retarded idiot would think that "the fight is being co-opted". Oh and you know what? Some commercial entitites are also a part of this community.

" Why the silence?  "

What silence? The noise is defeaning. What more do you want? What do you think people owe you anyway? Who the fuck are you to demand that PJ, Bruce, OSRM, or anybody else explain themselves to you. You are nothing but an idiot jerkwad posting on some web site just like me. Get off your ass, make a name for yourself and then demand that people explain themselves to you and see it that works out better. Nobody owes you an explanation get it?  People like PJ, Bruce and others are working their assess off every day to try to make the world a better place. Your vision of a better world may be different then theirs but what the fuck are you doing about it.

What makes you think that Eblen Moglen, RMS, and/or ESR have nothing better to do then to drop everything and explain something to you? Who the fuck are you to demand such treatment?
