For my day job I write software [not user apps, and not for linux], and what you have written is just another reminder that what the user sees is so many times so very different from what the software eng thought he had written.

I think SuSE would have been the right distro for you to start with, because every time it starts up, it gives the message "Have a lot of fun!" which is too naff to believe. But it's true. I thought that when Novell took over, that this motto would soon disappear, but I believe it is still there in 9.2. If ever Novell take it out, I shall take it as a bad omen.
