The largest problem is that the trolls would attach a comment to almost anything anyone seriously said. It would often take longer to identify and zero troll comments in a thread than to read and reply to serious comments.

More there had to be three votes before a zeroing would take effect that took time. And some for good reasons some for bad would act to counter a zero - it took a looong time before some otherwise intelligent members understood that the trolls were not acting in "good faith".

The result was that half or more the threads on this site simply weren't worth the trouble of reading through the dross if you didn't feel some kind of obligation to the site, and what the hell would be the point of posting thoughtful commentary if it were going to be drowned in bullshit?
