“Our clients kept asking us for our E-mail address and to send a file electronically,” says Todd Irwin, vice-president of Coltrin & Associates, a New York public-relations firm with 22 employees. Last year, Irwin started pushing founder Steve Coltrin, a 51-year-old technology neophyte, for a network. “I have to admit I didn't see it as a need-to-have,” says Coltrin. “But it became very clear that if we wanted to compete with the 3,000-people firms, we'd have to be technologically superior.”
