I'm sure it still communicated that "linux is not hard" because a grandmother can do it. But serendipitiously you also taught that while Linux may not always be trivially easy it is such that a "grandmother" can find a way to get the job done with it. This is even more valuable; that the difficulties of Linux can be overcome, and if there were youngsters in attendance the sight of some oldster not just running into really technical problems but then coping with them and then "getting it done" is one they'll remember.
As said, I think the combined lesson will be more powerful - and will stick far more deeply - than a painless install would have been.
