What is the best Linux news site?

General News

By hgc, Section General Articles
Posted on Sat Nov 20th, 2004 at 23:21:05 EST

This is a short article to determine what Linux news website we think is the best.

And the contestants are:

  • Linux Today (http://linuxtoday.com/)
  • Linux Weekly News (http://lwn.net/)
  • NewsForge (http://www.newsforge.com/)
  • Linux World (http://www.linuxworld.com/)
  • Linux Insider (http://www.linuxinsider.com/)
  • Linux Business Week (http://www.linuxbusinessweek.com/lbw.cfm)
  • Linux Planet (http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/)
  • LXer (http://lxer.com/)
  • OS News (http://www.osnews.com/)
  • slashdot (http://slashdot.org/)

Vote in the poll for the site that you think provides the best Linux news coverage and then tell us why you think so in the comments. Please also tell us why you didn't vote for others. Some of these sites are very good and some are not, please tell us why. Compare and contrast.

I probably missed some sites worthy of being here. What did I miss?

OS News is not just a Linux News site, but it deserves to be here because I think it's a very good site and does cover Linux news rather well. At least in my opinion. If you disagree, flame away.

Yes. I know that slashdot is not really a news site. It's here anyway because all polls involving websites must include slashdot. The reason for that is a secret that involves Cowboy Neal.

There will be extra credit for explaining what the watermelon is doing in the hydraulic press.

OK. Ready...

Go...

Does it matter? Some mention "everything but the kitchen sink", some are more selective. Some carry their own articles, some only link to articles on other sites. Why choose one when you can have them all ;-)

I, for one, am boycotting Linux today because of their "in-your-face", rude ad policy. It doubly ticks me off because I haven't found a way to Adblock it.  I voted for LXer after following a link to there from a statement by one of the originators of LT. He's calling for a boycott as well.
My, don't we live in interesting times...

LWN by a long shot. It's clean, consise, and the weekly issue's coverage is quite in depth. It's one of the few sites I pay real money to.

OT: Why can't I edit my user prefs? I get permission denied!?

LinuxBusinessWeek is out (3.40 / 5) (#2)
by Potential Recruit on Sun Nov 21st, 2004 at 06:21:46 EST
Because they publish articles from Maureen O'Gara and stand by her firmly. For those who don't know, O'Gara is a [paid?] SCO shill.

I'm not voting for two reasons...

First, I'm not a Linux user (Gasp!) but a UNIX user (have been since Bell Labs in 1982).

I therefore don't really have much reason to read any of those publications.

I have only read two of them, and one was insanely better than the other, but that does not give me any way to compare either with the rest of the pack.

Second, the poll is not asking for the *worst* publication - for that, I'd have a vote... (LBW)

Take care,

-- Tomas (engr. ret.)

Bye bye spambot (none / 1) (#15)

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
