The Making of a Bitter Groklaw Exile

Groklaw

By mikey, Section Diary
Posted on Mon Dec 6th, 2004 at 01:00:13 EST

Yes, I am officially a BGE™, SCO AstroTurfer™, SCO Shill™, and a Yahoo™. A bitter empty shell of a man. What went wrong? Where did I go off track? What sacred groklaw posting rule did I violate? Why was I banished? What was my crime?

Hell if I know. PJ won't tell me. When I asked her, she asked me if I wrote glsuck. So I have to assume that my crime was loving groklaw too much.

But I digress. Let's start at the beginning. In late May of 2004, I was sandboxed. The crime? Criticizing OSRM. PJ left a nice little note, informing me that my sig was offensive too her. My sig was "We don't believe in the pay out the ass business model". Coincidentally, this was my sixth post with this sig. PJ even replied to a post of mine earlier with no complaint about the sig.

Ever eager to please PJ, I changed my sig, and replied to her post. Changing my sig did not change the sigs on my prior posts, I asked her to give me edit privs or to delete them. I never heard back from her, my offending post was deleted. Curiously, the other posts with the offensive sigs were never sandboxed or deleted.

The offending post is gone, but someone else quoted it in a reply. It went something along the lines of "So, basically, you want the community to freely provide information, so OSRM can make money off of providing indemnification to linux users?".

After this treatment, I grew suspicious of PJ. My faith in her had been shaken. After a while, I decided that I had been spending too much time wearing my tinfoil hat. Surely PJ was sincere, she was just too busy to bother getting back to me. I wrote a self deprecating, satirical view of my paranoia titled "DANGER, DANGER, Don't talk to strangers!". I laughed at myself, and moved on.

Flash forward to October of 2004. I was going to a wedding in North Carolina. I am a night owl, was addicted to groklaw, and knew that there was no internet connection at the hotel. This was a problem. An itch, and I scratched it. I wrote a php app name glsuck that downloads groklaw, parses the articles and comments, and sticks them into a database. A database that I could view offline, late at night, in North Carolina, in a room without an internet connection...

It didn't take long. It was actually a quick port from another app I had previously written called yasuck. Yeah, yasuck, an app to download yahoo message boards messages, parse them, stick them into a database for offline viewing.

Being a F/OSS kind of guy, I announced to the yahoo SCOX message board that I had written glsuck, and it was available for download under the GPL. Bad idea.

A couple of weeks later, my groklaw account no longer worked. Poof, gone. All of my comments now appear to be written by someone named "anonymous".

My last post to groklaw had been almost two months prior. The post had to do with discussion about a transcription of a SCO Conference call, which had recently been posted as an article on groklaw. I provided the transcription. Spent hours on it, posted it on the yahoo SCOX message board. The eagle eye of Brenda spotted it, asked if I minded it being posted on groklaw. No problem I said, glad to make a contribution...

So there you go, the story of a BGE™. I hope you can learn from my experience. The separation has been bitter. I have lost all respect. My love betrayed me.

If you love groklaw too much, it will burn you.

mikey i had forgotten about that transcription but i thank you for reminding me.
it does seem that any that contributed actual effort are the ones being targeted.
i must not be important at all i cant even get deleted as a request.can i say yippiee?
the stories are coming out for all.
i didnt understand hgc when he said that glsucks causing the deletion being an act of war to start with.it took 2 days to sink in that it was a F/OSS program and you were being punished for writing what she was supposed to be defending.so more hypocrisy.

Exiles good; emigrés better. (3.88 / 9) (#48)
by mikecwaslurker ("I mote gull"(seabird)@btconnect.com) on Tue Dec 7th, 2004 at 06:25:39 EST
(User Info)
I'm only a lurker (well, strictly speaking, that's not true; I did post a few comments to Groklaw early in the year about software patents and stuff, but they mostly got ignored) and I really feel left out because I was never attacked by PJ (so far as I know; anyone with exciting stories about that please contact me directly; I'd love to be more involved).

So I can't call myself a BGE, because I've not been exiled; I'm more of an emigré. Nor can I be really bitter. Still, I suspect there are more of us IGEs (Ignored Groklaw Emigrés) than you BGEs. We ignored tend to keep quiet about it, you know; no point in emphasising our lowly status. I only do it to seek further attention; sad, isn't it?

I'd emigrated before the Grokwars started. I think PJ's attitude had started to show a bit too much. I don't like people who have to be in the right all the time, and who are never mistaken; there's only room in the Universe for one person like that, and that's me. I'd never come across that phrase "My way or the highway" before (US usage, is it?), but I saw it on GL, and it resonated. I stopped looking at GL fairly soon after.

It's a shame, but PJ started to show all the traits of a politician; she just hasn't learnt to attempt to hide the unattractive aspects of the malady as well as most of them do. All she did since was just the sort of things politicians would love to do, but know they can't get away with.

Groklaw started with such promise, but what will be left behind will be not so much a clique as a claque.
Clear skies!

This reminds me of when I was a kid. (3.58 / 12) (#2)
by rex007can on Mon Dec 6th, 2004 at 08:35:03 EST
(User Info)
You know? When I was a kid, I used to get screamed at the worse not when something bad happened, but always because of what COULD have happened. When something bad heppened, my mom was way too worried and concerned to yell at me, she would just work as fast as she could to make things better and make sure I was all right. But when I did something stupid and nobody did get hurt, then I was in for the "What the HELL were you thinking, you could have been killed etc etc etc..." It just wouldn't stop.

This reminds me of it because you wrote an app. that COULD have been used to archive the site and apparently, someone COULD have used it to hurt GL. Well in Pam's opinion it could have anyhow. I don't see when the freaking big deal is...but then again, I didn't see what the big deal was when I was a kid either...

So there you go. You were deleted for creating something that COULD have apparently been used for "evil". I guess we're just not mature enough to see the true error of our ways yet...only Pam knows best.

.... If you love it, set it free.
If it doesn't come back.
Hunt it down, tie it in the yard, and for GOD's sake,
have the thing neutered...

What will you say when SCO/O'Gara uses you for FUD (3.38 / 13) (#4)
by Potential Recruit on Mon Dec 6th, 2004 at 10:37:31 EST

Seriously.

I think it is becoming clear that PJ is not the "Leader of Nerds" that Linus is. She lacks the ability to herd cats - her nuttiness quotient is
too high. It appears that she is a prude, and possibly something of a prima donna as well.

Nevertheless, she has done far, far more good than bad.

When SCO and its allies use you BGE's for their FUD machine...

how will you respond?

Will you betray the cause you've all been fighting for in favor of the short term satisfaction of
stabbing PJ, or will you focus on the real enemy?

Will you clearly demonstrate to the world that you
have a lower "nuttiness factor" than PJ?

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
