IBM and Apple?

General News

By ColonelZen, Section General Articles

The register has an article up reporting rumors that IBM may be planning to buy Apple, citing analysts raising Apple's target price as support, and adding that IBM's dumping of their PC sales channel may have been to get clearance for this from the FTC.

While I have little to add in the way of fact, I have to say that this makes sense from other perspectives.

IBM has always had a problem with consumer marketing but with Linux poised to make a run for the desktop in coming years this marriage makes sense.

Most of us Linux enthusiasts don't care about the processor if our apps are available and we get adequate performance.  And the Power series, being RISC, is not as vulerable to scaling factors as the intel based architectures - IBM could well be making this play with some technical knowhow and prowess for which even Microsoft can't compensate

In one fell swoop they cut their ties to Microsoft, obtain hardware and licenses to hardware upon which Linux runs, get a recognised smooth desktop, and a respected if small consumer market channel.

This also makes sense from the point of view that IBM wanted to challenge MS and their intent to buy Sun (as long standing rumor had had it) was thwarted by Sun's sweetheart deal cum poison pill with Microsoft.

Bringing the market for their chip in house and eliminating licensing costs should allow them to sell the Apple hardware cheaper than Apple can, and by switching the OS to Linux they can consolidate much of the OS development and support costs with their ongoing Linux development.  By open-sourcing the desktop components they will simultaneously gain added good will from the community and gain the open-source synergy in its development.

The questions remaining are whether IBM can capitalize the small Apple consumer marketing channel into a corporate marketing channel, and can they make the price competitive with commodity intel architecture as the Linux desktop grows in popularity.

What do you think?

Why would IBM be interested in buying out a company that consists of about 3% of a market they are trying to get out of?

An interesting perspective, personally I'm not sure Apple would be worth the money for what is effectively being suggested.

IBM are short of hardware designers to produce cheap low-end consumer Power based boxes if they need to. (Remember Apple-Motorola-IBM have prep and chrp at one point for that very purpose).

That just leaves the (a) installed base (b) the software.

To create a consistent linux software base (as has been suggested several times, desktop -> server -> midrange -> highend server (Regatta) or Mainframe ) would imply porting much of the OSX software to linux, while I'm sure technically feasible how practical is it? you're torn between the tightly controlled OSX environment to a very open a flexible environment. i.e. Much of OSX works because it can make assumptions about the other base software installed, would the same be true of a linux base.

So to me it ultimately comes down to the software, what is the software worth? is it worth something as a proprietry layer on top of linux? Or would it require to become open and in that case potentially alienate a percentage (large?) of the current apple customer base.

2nd oldest profession? (3.33 / 6) (#2)

Is the computer industry's second oldest profession, I mean rumour?  I first heard it in 1984 or perhaps 1983.  It was a regular on the rumour circuit every 2 years thereafter (the various incarnations of "Cringley" got a lot of milage out of it), along with the "IBM will buy Novell", "Sun will buy Apple", "Digital will buy Apple", and "Novell will buy Lotus".  Ooops - the last one was for real.

Some of these combos might have made sense in the 1980s.  {Digital - Ken Olsen + Apple} might have worked - in 1987.  But today none of them make any sense at all.  Wintel is a low-margin commodity business, and Lintel is threatening to do the same to servers.  Buying Apple would bring any potential partner the worst of both worlds.

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
