is this maybe the answer for all us nongeeks?
it looks easy to use and easy to maintain too.
would i get bored with it tho after playing so much with mdk?
if i had an extra box i would be trying it out.
might also be an idea to try for my daughter to get her off MS.if anyone tries it out please let me know how it does.TIA

Ok I read a little more about this and it's not so large a nightmare as I first thought.  I had thought from first read-through that the executables were user cached and reloaded for each session.  Not.

Essentially this becomes just a different way of installing binaries for the distro of choice, once the correspondence between an executable name and the package name has been established.

Security issues are much less than I initially thought but there are some, mostly as Sunny pointed out because it is so new.

There are mechanical difficulties in establishing binary/package/dependency relationships and I have no idea how well they have been worked through.

There is an article and talkbacks on Freshmeat which I found informative.

Br3n, this might become a workable system generally in the future, especially if some major distro adopts it as a preferred means, but until then I'd consider it bleeding-edge: you don't do it unless you've been well trained in using sharp tools and have a well stocked first aid kit at hand.

I'll take more time for this tomorrow, but it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.   There are such things as local user promotion exploits but which are usually limited by the sofware locally as installed usually affecting only one particular release and only specific features; one corrupted package dl'ing a known bad library in this deal and you are 0wn3d.

The whole security section sounds awfully glib and (grossly) overstates the vulnerabilities of local installs in favor of this model.

I'm not making accusations (in a local, well secured environment this model may well be a better way of serving software; i. e. there are potentially very good uses in the right circumstances) but if I wanted to plant a mole to attack some otherwise unsavvy linux users at a later time, this is how I would go about it.

Hmmm.  On the one hand, I'm not convinced with there claim that this is more secure than traditional installation.  On the other, I can't see any reason in principle for it to be less secure, (though I'd be worried about that kernel module, at least for a while, until "many eyes" have taken a good look at it).  The main problem, as I see it, is that the easier you make it to use third-party software, the more likely it is that you or one of your users will do something silly:  One of the reasons that OE propogates viruses faster than a harbour whore on navy day is that it's just sooooo easy to click on that attachment.

Br3n an easier way to get your daughter off of MS, and make life easy for her.

The two of you get together and buy a mac- mini for her.

She gets a stable *nix based OS, that's easy to learn, and adminster.

You take her old computer and after copying her personal files off, Install the distro of choice(mandrake)
I thought once I was found but it was only a dream

Bye bye spambot (none / 0) (#18)

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
