Excellent SCOX Posts

General News

By ColonelZen, Section Logbooks
Posted on Wed Jan 26th, 2005 at 16:20:09 EST

I am starting this logbook to copy SCOX posts which are excellent material.

The posts themselves from SCOX should be top level comments and additional commentary under them.  Please include the Y user name and post number in the material, and by (very) strong preference get permission to copy.

SCOlympics 2004, by atul666 (4.33 / 3) (#4)

So the SCOlympics are upon us once more, having been awarded to the Lindon,
Utah metropolitan area after a highly questionable bidding process.

Several delightful events are scheduled for this year's festivities:

* Synchronized Tanking.  Similar to synchronized diving, except that at
least one member of the pair must be a technology or financial analyst.
Both divers throw money in the air as they plummet off the 100 meter
platform towards the empty pool far below.

* Men's 4x100 Delay.  Like a relay, but the slowest team wins.
Participants are encouraged to switch off repeatedly and make loud noises
while doing so, with no overall winning strategy in mind.

* Javelin Catching, a.k.a. "getting the shaft".  This one should be
obvious, and is a longstanding SCOlympic tradition.

* Fencing.  No, not with swords, silly, the other kind of fencing.  You
know, trying to resell stolen property.  Another popular SCOlympic
tradition.

* Legal Wrestling.  In this variant on freestyle wrestling, a competitor
wrestles six opponents at once, all of whom belong to a much higher weight
class.  There's no time limit.  Matches end with a victory (unlikely),
defeat (very likely), disqualification for doping, or when the SCOlympics
conclude and everyone has to go home.

* Sailing & Rowing, Utah style.  Inspired by the state's long nautical
tradition.  Rowing participants use cupped hands in the water instead of
oars.  Sailing participants are required blow on the sail to make the boat
go faster.  The finish line is far away and unmarked.  All vessels have a
hole in the hull so that they're slowly sinking during the course of the
race.  The object is to make it to the end, wherever that is.
Traditionally raced in heavy fog, if possible.

* Long Bump.  Like the long jump, but participants are required to meet a
minimum steroid level, and make use of various other forms of artificial
manipulation.  Participants may experience temporary feelings of flight,
but in the end they're no better off than when they started.  The future
of this event is uncertain at the 2004 SCOlympics, and it's felt there may
not be any more long bumps.

* IP Derby.  Not televised.  Often derided as just being a "pissing
contest".

* Flying Leap To The Moon.  Participants jump as high as they can, trying
to reach the moon.  To date, nobody has succeeded.  However, participants
continue to be optimistic, saying that this is the year, it's really going
to happen this time, they can feel it.

So come see the SCOlympics!  Pick your favorite event!  And back a winner!

Previously there were four recognized forms of intellectual property:
patent, trademark, trade secret, and copyright.

But in the past year a fifth form of
Intellectual Property (always Capitalized) has sprung into prominence, SCO
IP.

SCO IP has the following characteristics:

  1. It is Valuable, i.e. has vast monetary worth.

  2. It absorbs and ingests other forms of IP on contact. Much like an
amoeba feeding.

3) It has priority over all other forms of IP. When you have SCO IP, all
other claims are irrelevant.

4) It is transmutable, taking on the aspect of Copyright, Patent, Trade
Secret, or Trademark at will and as needed. It can be any combination of
the above, to fit the circumstance.

5) It is non-specific. Very non-specific. A simple declaration such as
"It's in there" is sufficient to establish your claim. "It's
a no-brainer" clinches the deal.

6) It is not subject to the laws of time. Having SCO IP allows you to
claim all that has gone before, rather than it being prior
art.

7) It is endlessly quoteable. Possession of SCO IP entitles you to daily
quotes in IT rags.

8) It is unchallengeable. You can't challenge it, because you are not
allowed to know what it is. It's SCO IP, that's all you need to know.

9) You have to pay for it. No free lunch, even if it is your lunch to
begin with.

10) It is, unfortunately, exclusive to SCO. If you are not SCO, you cannot
have SCO IP.

She carried on reading loyal Bar's post on CKX, as the tears welled up in
her eyes. Bar had had the courage to name them all. Big gay Al who had
sucked the literary lifeblood from her blog. Evil Jeff with the steel
rimmed glasses and the promotional Microsoft pen. Wicked br3n, who had
walked out of the Castle, and betrayed the secrets of autohide. Napoleon
Reddress who she could not quite remember, but was sure had taken
something intangible from her spirit. The 144,000 crickets, all the
supposed friends who betrayed her.

Her breast tremored as she thought of how loyal Bar had guarded her red
dress on the washing line, for a whole day and night before the Free
Software Community awards dinner. Yes, she was glad she had put on that
red dress to face the the world today.

She heard a gentle tapping on the window of the parlour and pulled back
the curtain. Her heart swelled, she smiled through the tears. It was loyal
Bar. She let him in through the door. "Tonight, Bar, you're not sleeping in
the yard, nor ever again."

Bar smiled for the first time. Her breast quivered as she pulled his head
onto the shoulder of her red dress and hugged him. Their embrace endured,
neither willing to break it. After an eternity, she felt the warmth of
Bar's dribble soaking through the back of the red dress. She thought of
stopping the drool by offering him some carrot cake, but she realised she
relished the sensation and felt safe in her parlour for the first time to
really enjoy wearing that dress, holding precious Bar.

No blog article that night, or ever again she thought.

THE END

Which of course Microsoft did to itself. But along the way it put some pretty good companies out of business, and no one could replace them and make a profit. PCTools made a very nice set of system tools. I'd love to know what they would be putting out today if Microsoft hadn't crushed them. Instead we ended up with a crappy defragmenter, "folders" that you can't filter, and freaking searches that take hours as you gaze at some stupid dog.
Plus you can't directly edit your disk, and you can't recover data.

ProComm has some nice communication software at the time, OK, time may have passed them by either way. Anyway, they, and anybody else putting out communication software got squashed. Netware? flattened. Stacker? pirated (Yo-ho BillG, that's what you did).

M$ made it so that the only model that would work is free software. It's the only thing their "bundling" scheme of marketing can't compete against. It is kind of ironic that M$ was so successful at stomping out legitimate proprietary competition that it created its own Frankenstein monster.

Well Bill, Steve, be careful what you wish for, because boys, you just got it.

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
