The paradox of free/open source project management
By: Joe Barr

Leaders from three separate but related -- and incredibly successful -- free/open source projects agree: If you want the project to move to the next level, let go and let the community take over. We asked Larry Wall, creator of Perl; Brian Behlendorf, the Apache Project leader; and Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, for their thoughts on why this happens and how they and their projects have fared as a result.

was very interesting that this story came up.
with all the talking about modding down posts/censorship or what ever term someone has labeled it,i found it telling that it seems the larger group makes the guidelines if the project is sucessful.
i believe that is what we have tried to accomplish here at IP-W.
i was told today that majority rule = mob rule  but if you look at one person rule that is dictatorship.
repression will not allow free flow of ideas and the project will eventually fail.
it takes many varied ideas to grow and expand.

Linus says "Some other projects had to almost fail -- or fork -- before the control got wrested from a too-controlling entity. It's a very fine balance to walk, I think: you need to still _care_ deeply, but you can't believe you know best, and there's a lot of trust needed when you decide that somebody else really is fit to make your decisions for you."

Joe Barr ends with these very apt words "Don't expect Linus to be going away. I've got a feeling he is in it for the long run, albeit more focused and better supported than ever before. If you're planning on creating a hugely successful free/open source project of your own, include a plan for letting go when the time is right. If you don't, it'll never get bigger than you are."

I was the one that told Br3n that majority rule is mob rule.  I stand by that.  In all cases where majority rule is absolute, the minority opinion will be repressed.  It is never intentional to begin with, but it does happen.  It will happen.

The writers of the Federalist Papers warned repeatedly of the tyranny of the Majority.  This is why the US has a representative government instead of an absolute democracy.

A dictatorship is a bad thing, that is for sure, but absolute majority rule is even worse.

Bye bye spambot (1.00 / 2) (#12)

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
