Mea Culpa

General News

By JCausey, Section Diary
Posted on Tue Feb 22nd, 2005 at 00:01:18 EST

As I'm sure many of our site visitors and members noticed, earlier today we had a Diary entry posted here by one of our members that I considered vulgar and offensive (the Diary entry that is).  Based on the few comments that were posted, so did several of our registered members.

When I ran across it, I felt I needed to take some action to tone it down a bit, especially with regard to the personal nature of the statements that were being made.  That action was to edit the entry to remove a name being used and I eliminated one phrase.

With time to reflect and to view some input from other site visitors, I determined that, although the site's SOP clearly states IP-Wars.net reserves the right to edit articles (which a Diary entry is an article), that was not the best course of action.  Instead, the best and most appropriate course of action was to just delete the entry.  So, I erred in my initial response to handling the post, but hopefully this has corrected the situation.  My apologies.

I also want to say that I am deeply troubled by the fact that I have had to a) resort to quarantining members who appear to be intent on destroying the usefulness of the site and b) having to delete a post by a member.  I knew that it was inevitable that these actions would eventually have to be taken, but I still find it disturbing and disappointing.  I have tried to be as open as possible in noting when these actions occur and exactly what action has been implemented.

While I am writing on a more personal note than my usual articles, I would like to say thank you to our many members who are working hard on this site (in many ways, big and small).  And I would like to extend a special thank you to the few members we have who frequently find themselves in the minority during the conversations but endeavour(sp?) to make their points and rebut other's points in a civil manner.  I'm sure they know who they are and I am glad they are here fighting for their viewpoint.

Just so you know, I have been reviewing many of the suggestions made here on the site about language used for a variety of issues, procedures, policies, etc.  With all of the activity of the past 3+(almost 4) months, I think I am in a much better position to make some tweaks and address some weaknesses that I think exist.  So be sure to provide your input as I work through these issues (and I will be seeking your input).

Again, thanks to everyone!  I appreciate the help in trying to make this experiment/project work!  I'll try to do better going forward. :-)

Jeff

Absolutely NO apology needed (4.43 / 16) (#23)

Bar and his cohorts/pseudonyms is a saboteur.
He not an agent provocateur, he certainly has absolutely no interest in the truth, reality or anything this site was created for. His only interest is to keep any valid discussion from evolving and to keep people here and on CKX in defense mode so that they have no time to talk about anything other than what he wishes.

He probably doesn't care about you ever having worked with M$ products, or the moderation policy here or even that his comments keep getting zeroed.

All he wants is to keep controlling the conversation. And as far as I know, he's been extremely successfull at it. It seems people just can't get into their heads that it's absolutely pointless to argue anything he says. The moment you respond to him, he wins!

So in my opinion, his posts DESERVE the zero rating. His Diary entry Deserved the deletion and if it was possible, he deserves to be blacklisted.

Not because of the content of his posts, but because of his intentions. He's not gaming the system, he's gaming the players. And apparently, the players can't seem to figure that out.

It's quite distressing I tell you.

Just my 0.02$

.... If you love it, set it free.
If it doesn't come back.
Hunt it down, tie it in the yard, and for GOD's sake,
have the thing neutered...

IMO Jeff you have no need to feel guilty about anything here.  It's a learning experience for all of us.

Personally I never would have believed that there are people who are capable of writing coherent sentences who are at the same time so grotesquely hostile to civil discussion.  That's not a lesson I wanted to learn, but I guess it had to be learned.

I hope we can collectively find ways to deal with it.  Thank you for providing the venue for the experiments, as well as an outlet for our writings and mutual edification from silly scribblings to cosmic contemplation.

All I can say Jeff is keep up the good work.  I can certainly respect the difficulty of your position, trying to herd cats is not fun.

Hopefully we will make it through growing pains with our collective sanity intact :)

All except for 2 rating Harlan at 1.

I think that 140 ratings like this, of one person in sequence, at any single value require an explanation. [OK, I have done this to magic, based on his tagline].

Obviously drone's ratings of Harlan will impact unfairly on his mojo, and I think that this should be reversed.

Did try to mail you privately, but your admin address bounces yahoo, it would appear.

Well jeff it was to be expected. Your trusted users have been abusing their power to hide posts. First it was supposedly for language, then it was for "abuse" for any given arbitrary definition of abuse. Finally somebody (most likely colonelzen but I of course am not allowed to know) actually his one of my posts becasue I called him on a lie and asked him to provide a link.

I hope you continue to stay active in what you have created and at least rebuke members who abuse their trusted status.

You need to develop a better command of latin.

It's not your fault, it's your responsibility.

You project onto a large number of frankly well meaning people who are simply in disagreement with the very public statements published here and elsewhere by members of this group some kind of destructive hostility toward your project here.

"Destroying the usefulness of this site" is being very effectively acomplished from within. Until the membership decides they don't simply want a clan home where they can shout down and demean those who simply disagree, often in a more civil fashion than the tu's you'll go faster and faster toward implosion.

You're on the giving end of moderation. You don't, as a group, seem to be handling that well. Imagine if you actually had traffic, or beople who really had an interest in distrupting your "work".

I believe that he already asked for his account to be nuked,  and his posts to be removed (see under Goodbye Everybody), so this would hardly be a punitive action. Also, he admits to gaming the system here:

<<The anti F/OSS rhetoric, the universally abused rating system (yes, I played as well), the hostility, and the genuinely lowbrow undertow all are facets of why.>>

While you're doling out justice, maybe you could deal with people who consistently give 0s to anyone who they disagree with. ColonelZen has stated that he does. So has Mikey. Check out this exchange for more of the same:

http://www.ip-wars.net/comments/2005/2/22/0119/23918/6?mode=alone;showrate=1#6

Of course, no one can really ask for "administrative action" against people keeping their mojo low with zeroes, because giving zeroes affords one anonymity!!!!

So has this diary and the comments been mirrored on korgwal or yahoo or something?

I missed it. I want to read it.

Frankly I don't trust you when you say it was offensive. Your trusted users tend to label any disagreement as offensive or abusive.

Bye bye spambot (none / 0) (#103)

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
