By JCausey, Section Diary
As I'm sure many of our site visitors and members noticed, earlier today we had a Diary entry posted here by one of our members that I considered vulgar and offensive (the Diary entry that is). Based on the few comments that were posted, so did several of our registered members.
When I ran across it, I felt I needed to take some action to tone it down a bit, especially with regard to the personal nature of the statements that were being made. That action was to edit the entry to remove a name being used and I eliminated one phrase.
With time to reflect and to view some input from other site visitors, I determined that, although the site's SOP clearly states IP-Wars.net reserves the right to edit articles (which a Diary entry is an article), that was not the best course of action. Instead, the best and most appropriate course of action was to just delete the entry. So, I erred in my initial response to handling the post, but hopefully this has corrected the situation. My apologies.
I also want to say that I am deeply troubled by the fact that I have had to a) resort to quarantining members who appear to be intent on destroying the usefulness of the site and b) having to delete a post by a member. I knew that it was inevitable that these actions would eventually have to be taken, but I still find it disturbing and disappointing. I have tried to be as open as possible in noting when these actions occur and exactly what action has been implemented. While I am writing on a more personal note than my usual articles, I would like to say thank you to our many members who are working hard on this site (in many ways, big and small). And I would like to extend a special thank you to the few members we have who frequently find themselves in the minority during the conversations but endeavour(sp?) to make their points and rebut other's points in a civil manner. I'm sure they know who they are and I am glad they are here fighting for their viewpoint. Just so you know, I have been reviewing many of the suggestions made here on the site about language used for a variety of issues, procedures, policies, etc. With all of the activity of the past 3+(almost 4) months, I think I am in a much better position to make some tweaks and address some weaknesses that I think exist. So be sure to provide your input as I work through these issues (and I will be seeking your input). Again, thanks to everyone! I appreciate the help in trying to make this experiment/project work! I'll try to do better going forward. :-) Jeff
