This is the SCOX Jargon file. Please feel free to suggest new entries in comments.

Similarly after a while anyone so inclined is free to rewrite this with suggested new entries and an incremented version number as appropriate.

-- TWZ

  • Autozone: An auto parts distributor being sued by SCOX for copyright violations.  Alledgedly for use of Linux.

  • biff: Yahoo poster backinfullforce. The acronym also reference a historical usenet poster noted for juvenilia. Biff spends his internet life in defense of SCOX's position through a variety of context switching and misrepresentation of legal documents and statements. This infamy has been so prolonged, tenacious and profound that many actually admire him.

  • Caldera: The prior name of the company known as SCOX.  Caldera was an early pioneer in commercial Linux distributions.  It didn't work out.  In meiotic union Caldera merged with Santa Cruz Operations and subdivided into Tarantella and Caldera2 which was subsequently renamed The SCO group.

  • cc10: IBM's counter claim ten, fully briefed as of 2004-09-15 in which they ask the court to rule that Linux in no way infringes upon SCOX copyrights.

  • cc8: IBM's counter claim eight in which they ask the court to rule SCOX violated IBM's copyrights with respect to IBM's GPL released material in Linux.

  • CKX: The Yahoo finance board of Calcasieu Real Estate and Holdings, which had no postings to which grokwars was banished at it's height.  A few of it's detainees have escaped permanently, and some others are occasionally given day or weekend passes for good behavior.

  • Damlier-Chrysler: Being sued by SCOX ... for copyright violations of SysV when they cancelled their license seven years earlier.  Judge Chabot bounced SCOX right out of her courtroom but the SCOX has tried various maneuvers to keep it alive based upon a ruling that possibly DC should have responded in less time to the initial letters from SCOX.

  • Flagon: A mythical dragon, chief protagonist in a series of very entertaining stories written and posted on SCOX by diogenese19348.

  • GrokLaw: http://www.groklaw.net/ A web site of some controversy on SCOX but which almost all agree does post useful commentary on the SCOX cases.

  • Grokwar: The flamefest between those offering immoderate support and immoderate dissent with various aspects of GrokLaw's practices and policies. http://www.ip-wars.net/story/2004/11/5/63016/7695

  • grokwhiner: (by special request of a grokwhiner) Someone who brings up grokwars on SCOX at every opportunity.

  • Kimball, Dale A., District Judge, District of Utah: Presiding judge of the SCOX v IBM and SCO v Novell cases.

  • Lanham Act: Title 15 USC Chapter 22.  Laws regarding Trademarks but SCOX is mostly concerned with its penalties for misrepresentation of goods and services by oneself or to disparage a competing product.  Concerned in an unhappy way.

  • ledite: One of the more entertaining if less lucid shills/trolls on SCOX.

  • llort: Troll backwards. A person or post of no real substance but likely to get recs for saying something many agree with.

  • loose, lose: FYI: loose means unbound.  lose is the antithesis of win.  Interchangable in practice on SCOX.

  • Nazgul: A sobriquet for IBM's lawyers. They strike terror into their prey, and only a fool would seek a confrontation.

  • Novell: Being sued by SCOX for defamation of title to the Unix copyrights.  While still in the courts the early rounds did not go well for SCOX.  Novell, of course, is the company to whom AT&T subsidary USL sold the Unix business, and who in turn sold something to Santa Cruz.  The details of what are part of what is in contention in the SCOX vs The World cases but it appears that Santa Cruz received only Unixware and the Unix licensing business.

  • plonk: verb meaning to add to one's ignore list.  Virtually onomatopoetic.

  • QNC, quality_not_compromise: An entertaining troll noted for his abhorrence of all things Linux.  May be the same person as quality_not_linuxlies, and commie_crusher.  Bizarre.

  • recs: The currency of exchange on the Yahoo message boards. Really meaningless except for really large numbers or a long history for a poster of getting moderate numbers.

  • rec ho, rec whore: Someone whose life is so meaningless that they desparately try to find affection and meaning through acquiring recs for their posts.

  • RedHat: From the turnabout is fair play department, suing SCOX for Lanham Act and interference with trade for SCOX's allegations regarding Linux.

  • shill: One who touts a stock.  On SCOX since most posters are of the opinion that SCOX is doomed to bankruptcy and dissolution the shill and troll are often used interchangably.

  • Tarantella: Haploid sibling of SCOX (see Caldera).  The bad genes seem to be mostly confined to SCOX.

  • their, there, they're: "their" is the third person plural possesive pronoun. "they're" is a contraction for "they are". "there" a pronoun representing a location.  The laws of english have been suspended on the Yahoo SCOX board, and these may be used interchangably.

  • to, too, two: to is a preposition or an auxilliary verb.  too is an adjective.  two is a number.  One may be used for the other as the denizens of SCOX think of typing as modern art.

  • to teh moon: A shill's typo which has become a cant phrase indicating the idiocy of shilldom on the SCOX board.

  • SCOX: The stock symbol for The SCO Group, and the name of the Yahoo message board.

  • Terekhov, Alex: Alex Terekhov, poster on SCOX who frequently sees a good debating tactic in calling others either Stupid or a Vegetable. Often "proves" his point by listing a large number or URLs often just back references to earlier posts of his own (thus proving little or nothing).  (And if you need a lawyer forgot all those who have given in and adhered to the terms of the the GPL, Alex will solve it all through the principle of first sale)(ex pgk)

  • SysV: The collective name for the Unix source developed by AT&T and still held by USL after USL v. BSDI.

  • TFAD: Troll for a day. Someone who is bored pretends to be a troll.

  • The One Who Must Not Be Named: Alex Terekhov, as mentioning him by name will summon him from the nether regions even after prolonged absence for another Ritual of First Sale and the GPL.

  • troll: Someone who posts controversial material with the intent of causing additional non informative exchanges.

  • USL v BSDI: That is Unix Systems Laboratories vs Berkeley Systems Design Incorporated.  AT&T developed the original Unix code, with lots of input from various corporations and universities.  The best known university where a great deal of development went on was University of California at Berkeley.  Some UC students (and faculty) formed BSDI to market the code written at UC which was comingled with original AT&T code, then administered by USL as a daughter corporation.  There followed a mighty battle whose songs are still sung by troubadors of the internet where nobody came away completely happy but the Berkeley code BSD came out after the dust settled essentially unencumbered as BSD still known in various flavors today while some code, nominally copyrighted but of very challengable provenance remained with USL and was known as SysV.  For many years the details of the settlement were a mystery, but that is beginning to become clear, but it remains highly likely that any specific SysV code can be challenged on copyright as being part of BSD or of otherwise unspecifiable origin.

  • Wells, Brooke, Magistrate Judge, District of Utah: Magistrate charged with overseeing discovery in SCO v IBM.

  • WAG: Wild Arsed Guess.  Somewhat institutionalized by the yahoeuvre site, meaning a guess without evidence or support of some future event.

  • Yah, yahoeuvre: http://warmcat.com/yahoeuvre/ A website gathering and maintaining statistics and histories of various posts and posters on SCOX and related boards.
