Stallman wins his bet?

General News

In the beginning of last month, the L4-Hurd group got the first progarm to compile and run.

The old Mach version was just too slow and work ground to a halt when there seemed no way to fix it. The switch to the L4 kernel appears to have brought the project back to life.

L4-HURD has immense superiorities to Linux in a number of areas. The big question is performance. It looks like they might have that solved. If so, the vastly simpler and cleaner internal structure will make it possible to decentralize kernel software development and avoid the Linus bottleneck problem that Linux has.

It's early to make predictions, but I think in 6 months we'll know how it's going to turn out. The simpler design gives the project a lot leverage. Everything should be much easier to do. If they do well with the VM (it's not part of the kernel, but  Hurd still needs one) and the device driver model, the rest should be easy.

The BSDs may be alternatives to Linux, cleaner internally and more secure, but the advantages aren't compelling. This may be different. Check back in October. The Foss Unix landscape could look very different. L4-HURD might be just the thing for the cell processor.

According to the Hurd What's New? page:

http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/whatsnew.html

This is the first news since August 2003.

Can you name me three people who will ever install and use the Hurd kernel for anything other than amusement value?  Had it been usable in 1992, perhaps, but not today or any time I can see in the future.

This is very interesting.
Hope it's not just a rumour.

ok here is where my lack of knowledge makes it difficult for me.
i have chatted with 2 different people that are running? the HURDkernel.now what that means i dont know but i will have to ask them what the L4 is to them and see what they think.my question here is,as a nontechie do you forsee where i need to move to it?i dont run servers or have users log on.
is this more for businesses?
