According to the European software patent campaign group Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII), Michal Kleiber, Polish Science Minister, has indicated that Poland is looking for another country to take the lead in opposition to the disputed EU software patent directive at a EU Council meeting on 7 March 2005. Professor Kleiber has an background in civil engineering, and he has an interest in computing, judging by his role as Editor-in-Chief of Arcanes of Computational Methods in Engineering. In other words, he's one of us. It sounds like Poland, as a recent joiner to the EU, is feeling diplomatically exposed.
http://wiki.ffii.org/index.cgi?Kleiber050304En The European Parliament is getting ever more angry over the executive's continued attempts to wave through the flawed patent directive. Austrian MEP Maria Berger has fingered Bill Gates' recent european jaunt as an attempt to influence the process, saying that the commission has taken on his position uncritically. The row now looks like reigniting bad feeling between the Parliament and Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. Let's hope another country steps up to the plate.
