Patents

According to the European software patent campaign group Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII), Michal Kleiber, Polish Science Minister, has indicated that Poland is looking for another country to take the lead in opposition to the disputed EU software patent directive at a EU Council meeting on 7 March 2005. Professor Kleiber has an background in civil engineering, and he has an interest in computing, judging by his role as Editor-in-Chief of Arcanes of Computational Methods in Engineering. In other words, he's one of us. It sounds like Poland, as a recent joiner to the EU, is feeling diplomatically exposed.

http://wiki.ffii.org/index.cgi?Kleiber050304En

The European Parliament is getting ever more angry over the executive's continued attempts to wave through the flawed patent directive. Austrian MEP Maria Berger has fingered Bill Gates' recent european jaunt as an attempt to influence the process, saying that the commission has taken on his position uncritically.

The row now looks like reigniting bad feeling between the Parliament and Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Let's hope another country steps up to the plate.

EU governments, parliament to face off on software bill
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techpolicy/2005-03-07-eu-software-patents_x.htm
By Constant Brand
BRUSSELS -- European Union governments gave their support Monday to a much-delayed bill backed by big high-tech companies aiming to promote software innovation.

The draft bill, however, is set to meet stiff opposition from the European Parliament which threw out the proposal only last month saying it was not good enough, putting into question the fate of the legislation.

From the article: 'The Computer Implemented Inventions Directive (CIID), which seeks to clarify the issue, is still being fought over in the EU and may or may not result in legalizing them. For small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and in particular, free software projects, there is much to lose.'"

With all due respect MR, I can't help but feel you are casting pearls before swine.

ip-wars is really not about ip wars. The primary purpose of ip-wars is to smear Linux F/OSS allies.

If you want intelligent discussion of issues like this, you may wish to check out groklaw.net where such issues are taken seriously and debated/argued by people with knowledge and experience in such matters.

This advice also applies to Ses and Cods - if you are really interested in this subject, check out:

I know your contributions will be well received and respected.

This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
