In Yahoo SCOX(E) post 257412 I posted the following as "Argumentation Exception".
------ Following upon Darl's "who is PJ" rants, we (including me) have argued that it makes no difference "who" PJ is, and thererfore in real substance what her motives are. I am having difficulty justifying that in any objective sense. The primary reason I don't care, and from what I've read those who have argued this way are mostly in agreement, is that GL is a large body of work and consistant, coherent and mostly correct and verifiable. It stands on it's own. Therefore the motives of it's author are irrelevant to the substance of the work. The problem is that we have attacked MOG, Enderle, Didio etc based upon their motivations. (Well, I don't think I have to any large extent - I'm aware that it's weak and somewhat circular - but likely have slipped myself at some point in over a year of posting). We assert that their works are inconsistant without ascribing an insidious motivation which (to us) renders them comprehensible within that framework - and then we circularly attack them for that motivation. Given our attacks on other pundits, our assertion that motive is irrelevant regarding PJ's works will sound very much like mere self justification to someone not sharing our gestalt. Should someone think or believe (or just assert) that say Enderle's work is reasonably consistant and rational (yeah, I know...) then if we claim right to analyze and attack Enderle's work based upon his motivation then why shouldn't they have the right to analyze PJ's work based upon her motivations? Please note that Enderle's admission of having recieved commisions by Microsoft (for some works) aggravates, not alleviates this contrast. So help me out here. While I don't care about PJ's motivations, myself considering her work self explanatory, largely correct and standing on its own, this argument will not carry the weight in a larger context - especially given our collective demeanor towards MOG/Enderle/Didio/Lyons etc. Can anyone post a rationale which will pass muster? ------------ Now Maureen O'Gara has published some of the particulars about PJ. I'm not going to give the links, because first you can find them easily enough yourself, and second the articles contain far more specific personal information than is necessary (or should be disclosed) than is necessary for discussion of motivation and interest as per the above discussion. The first iteration of the article appeared on what seems to be a web site controlled by O'Gara and without further confirmation was suspect. Now Linux businessweek has published the story, and we can presume that their editorial board has received some confirmation of the factual data. The LBW version has some pictures... A mailbox a driveway, the wall of an apartment building, and a picturesque lane; real meat here! (sarcasm for the intellectually impaired) The factual data about her presented is rather trivial. PJ is 61, lives in an apartment building in West Chester County, NY near White Plains, has a mother in Connecticut, and a son in NYC. She seems to have some affiliation with the Jehovah's Witnesses, but whether practicing or not is unclear. She has evidently shared some business and writing interests with her son. Now according to the argument I presented above, "outing" the facts would be fair game. MOG's piece did the abolute unabashed unashamed "best" (well worst, in terms of ethics but best from an artistic standpoint) of presenting these mundanities in the worst possible light - like describing a neighbor who goes fishing a lot as frequently leaving the house in the middle of the night in disreputable clothes carrying knives and other implements. According to the article PJ has been away from her apartment for some time. It is strongly implied that she claimed to have left out of fear for her safety. Surprisingly the article does give some indication that that may be less than a completely irrational reaction. Whomever did the investigating reported that someone else had evidently attempted entry to PJ's apartment. So counting the person who did the investigating that means at least two persons hounding her in physical presence. It is quite understandable that someone of retiring disposition would be quite alarmed. Nothing in MOG's article gives any reason to believe that anything in PJ's personal life or personal business would be at conflict with how she has presented the materials about SCOX and the various legal cases. That would be significant; what has been presented is not. It is not at all surprising, even expected given the antagonists that some details of PJ's life would come out. The groundrules we have implicitly endorsed say so. MOG had every right to present the facts; her "spin" was out of line. -- TWZ
