Googlebombs Falling?

General News

By JCausey, Section General Articles
Posted on Thu Jun 30th, 2005 at 22:44:11 EST

As most readers probably know, this site has been named in a lawsuit filed by Jeff Merkey against a variety of individuals, organizations, and sites (more info from Mr. Merkey available at merkeylaw.com). One of the specific actions that Mr. Merkey alleges in his complaint is found in item #30:
30. Defendants mrbuttle and IP-WARS.NET is an Internet website which "hacks" search engines on the Internet through google spamming, google bombing, and other unlawful practices designed to tamper with Internet hosting computers and search engines...
In a phone conversation with Mr. Merkey (well, at least someone alleging to be Mr. Merkey, though I have no reason to doubt that it was him) subsequent to his filing, I noted that he again mentioned "google bombing" as one of the specific items he wanted removed from the web site.

Now, these terms may be old news to many readers here, but they were new to me. So, it was time to do some research and research means writing an article about what I found.

Google spamming
The first term to examine was actually the last one I looked into, that being "google spamming". From what I could tell, there is not really a specific type of hack known as "google spamming". It appears that google spamming is really a reference to actions to game the Google page ranking system. Apparently this is done through a variety of means, the most common of which appears to be the use of "hidden text, deceptive cloaking or doorway pages". In fact, Google provides a specific page for users to report search results that they think are popping up inappropriately due to spamming.

That is not the end of the story though. As I discovered, "google spamming" is just a subset of search engine spamming that is not specific to Google (and of course, the spammers would tell you they are engaging in SEO - search engine optimization). I found one good explanation of this at the Jump Start Search site, where they have a page that explains:

Search Engine Spam is the use of unethical techniques for improving the position of a web site in a search engine. In order to manipulate their position in a search engine, some web site owners use spamming (unethical techniques) and thereby try to fool the search engines.
The site goes on to provide a list of different search engine spam techniques:
  • Content spam - includes things like invisible text(by making the text color the same as the background color) and keyword stuffing (keywords in small font at the bottom of a page);
  • Meta spam - includes the use of unrelated keywords and the use of keywords in hidden html tags;
  • identical pages
  • "code swapping"
  • redirects
  • and link farms.
As the Jump Start Search site indicates, "search engine spamming attempts usually center around being top ranked for extremely popular keywords." I'm not really sure how "google spamming" really fits into Merkey's view of what he is being subjected too - it seems to be unrelated. If this site were engaged in "google spamming", it would seem more likely there would be lots of hidden pages, text, etc., with the text "Britney Spears" or something (you know, a popular keyword). This does explain the spam comments we get from the Chinese bots (comments which we all work to get rid of as soon as they are spotted btw).

Google bombing
The next term to look at was not as elusive as "google spamming", although I was not familiar with it. Fortunately, "Googlebomb" has a Wikipedia entry (you get the same result searching for "google bombing") that explains it:

A Google bomb or Google wash is an attempt to influence the ranking of a given site in results returned by the Google search engine. Due to the way that Google's PageRank algorithm works, a website will be ranked higher if the sites that link to that page all use consistent anchor text.
One example of a Google bomb that most ip-wars.net visitors will probably be familiar with is the attempt to Google bomb SCOG with the term "litigious bastards". By getting the text "litigious bastards" consistently hyperlinked to SCOG's web site on different sites around the Internet, some hope that anyone searching on the term "litigious bastards" will see SCOG show up at the top of the search results. A quick check tonight showed SCOG's site coming up #2 after the Litigious Bastards site.

The Wikipedia entry goes on to explain:

A common means of exploiting this is through weblogs, where although the entry may disappear from the main page quickly, the short-term effects of a link can dramatically affect the ranking of a given site. Empirical results indicate that it does not take a large number of websites to achieve a Googlebomb. The effect has been achieved with only a handful of dedicated weblogs.

The above statement has to be qualified, however. A handful of blog links will not Google bomb someone like Amazon out of the top results for "books," for example. In fact, Googlebombs have generally had an impact on relatively "non-competitive" terms, where there's no particular page that seems to be necessarily the right answer.

The history of Googlebombing is quite fascinating and humorous (at least it was to me). For instance, one of the more infamous Googlebombs mentioned is "more evil than Satan" returning the Microsoft web site at the top of the search results.

If we look back at that last comment from the Wikipedia though, we see that Googlebombs seem to be aimed more at getting certain pages to show up based on more obscure searchs. Remember earlier I noted that Google spamming is intended to get sites to show up based on searches of common or popular search phrases - Googlebombs appear to be the other end of the spectrum, getting sites to show up based on searches of uncommon or unpopular search phrases.

Once again, I'm a bit befuddled as to how Mr. Merkey thinks he (or more properly one of his sites) has been Googlebombed. To be a "Googlebomb", there would have to be links created on many different sites using the same text with the hyperlinks all pointing to the same site. I'm not aware of any site Mr. Merkey operates that has been around for a long time (long enough for anyone to spread links around the Internet pointing to it) nor am I aware of any calls for consistent use of a specific phrase or text to point to such a site if one did exist.

I did decide to do a little experiment and tried various search phrases with Google, like "peyote", "peyote smoker", "Cherokee peyote", and "SCO employee". None of the results containing "peyote" returned anything involving Merkey (at least not within the first 3-4 pages - I didn't go further as anything deeper doesn't really seem to qualify as a "Googlebomb" or "Google spamming"). Both ip-wars and Groklaw(an old page from the radio.weblogs days) showed up in the results for "SCO employee", though none of those results pointed to anything about Mr. Merkey (hehe - and www.welovethescoinformationminister.org showed up as well).

Tacking on "Merkey" to "SCO employee" brings up several results, most of which are due to Merkey's lawsuit. Discounting those, the only results are from Merkey's own posts or coverage of his lawsuit from several years ago. If anything, it would appear that Merkey has created a pseudo-Googlebomb (I say "pseudo" since the text on these sites are not anchor text as part of any hyperlinks) pointing to ip-wars, Groklaw, LWN, and even slashdot based on the search words "SCO employee Merkey". Similar results were achieved doing a search on the words "kill" and "Merkey" - everything that popped up relating the two are sites covering his lawsuit. You have to dig deeper to find the infamous "killfile" comments from Perens. So once again, it appears that he has actually created the pseudo-Googlebomb pointing to the sites he complains about by the action of filing his lawsuit.

Google hacking
Finally, I did a quick search on the term "Google hacking". Although Merkey does not use this specific term, he does make reference to "hacking" and search engines. As I discovered, "Google hacking" actually refers to the use of Google to discover vulnerabilities in web sites or to discover information that people didn't want found (ironically, one would assume you would engage in "Google hacking" to try to find the hidden pages and such that are used by the "Google spamming" folks). The number one search result on "Google hacking" on Google itself turns up johny.ihackstuff.com a site that maintains the Google Hacking Database. I also found the Google Hack Honeypot which has been set up to work with the GHDB to try to track the techniques used by Google hackers so you can in turn strengthen your own site.

So this is obviously not what Merkey was referring to. I just thought it was very interesting

Summary
So there you have it. A brief explanation of what "Google spamming" and "Google bombing" are. These were new terms to me and it was interesting learning more about them. Hopefully nobody else out there was as in the dark as me about these terms (at least Robin Bloor was though), but if you were I hope this helps.

Thanks for reading!

Funny thing is that googlebombing isn't illegal (4.20 / 10) (#17)
by david anderson on Sun Jul 3rd, 2005 at 02:27:52 EST

Not even Google woul try and tell anyone that Googlebombing was illegal. For that matter, there aren't any types of search engine SPAM that is illegal.

In fact, in SearchKing v. Google, Google fought for the right to post whatever link you want on your own site as your own opinion.

It would actually be fun to depose someone at Google and get their opinion on it.

You didn't googlebomb, you didn't SE spam, and even if you did, it isn't illegal. Just because he says it is illegal, doesn't make it so.

Mention this to your lawyer and he will probably write up a nice motion for dismissal and a request for attorney's fees.

Redacted version disappearing? (4.00 / 4) (#24)

I notice that tuxrocks no longer even has the redacted version available.

Al Petrofsky still has them on scofacts.org, but there is no link to them on any page I can find (including the updates).

I haven't checked, but I assume the overseas link still has the unredacted version.  I just find it odd that it appears that Merkey is creating a situation where the only way to get any information is either his site or PACER.

Merkey meaning (3.88 / 9) (#2)

IOW his complaint isn't about what anyone's doing on IPW, it that it exists, and some people have expressed their views on him, and that there exists a well known tool which will turn up those views should anyone be interested.   Of course someone has to be bored enough to type something like "whacked JeffM" (I should have used his full name!)  in google to actually find it.

His real problem is that he thinks there are that many people who actually care either about him or what others think of him.

Some help for Mr. Merkey? (3.85 / 7) (#19)
by JCausey (jcausey@ip-wars.net) on Thu Jul 14th, 2005 at 08:53:29 EST
(User Info) http://www.ip-wars.net
Noticed a blurb on the slashdot feed and went to read this article on Globetechnology (actually, looks like a subsection of Globeandmail.com:

Could Googling become illegal?

The author and a few other folks think this Canadian bill could put Google at risk of copyright infringement in Canada (from my quick skimming, perhaps for the Google cache portion - might want to check out the post on the Internet Archive lawsuit or the text of the complaint).  I have not had a chance to explore it in depth to see if the contentions are anywhere near accurate.

Anyway, this doesn't appear to really have anything to do with Mr. Merkey's apparent issues with Google.  I just figure anything that might slow down Google's ability to help people find stuff on the web, would be something Mr. Merkey would like.

I don't think so (3.83 / 12) (#3)

As most readers probably know, this site has been named in a lawsuit [...]

No. I didn't know that. And I think you may be mistaken.

I've seen a internet website which purports to name some "MRBUTTLE a.k.a. IP-WARS.NET", and alleges:

30. Defendants mrbuttle and IP-WARS.NET is an Internet website which "hacks" search engines on the Internet through google spamming, google bombing, and other unlawful practices designed to tamper with Internet hosting computers and search engines and posts hate speech attacking individuals and groups on the basis of race, religion, and cultural affiliation. The address and location of defendants is believed to be within the State of California, but is unknown at the present time.

Best on all the evidence available to me at this time, the most reasonable conclusion is that this website is a work of fiction—a parody of a complaint.

I thought "googlebomb" was Mr Merkey's confused rendering of
doodlebug a.k.a. buzzbomb.
(In case anyone does not recognise those terms, they were
London's pet-names for one of Adolf's wonderful V-weapons in
1944.)

Seriously, thanks for the explanations - all interesting
and new to me.

Maybe we should all stop needling the poor guy.  IMO the
people telling him he needs to consult a lawyer are wrong:
really a psychiatrist would be much more useful.  To keep
goading him into further frenzies looks a bit like sadism.

Jeff,  The link for the lawsuit is bad.

You currently have http://sco.tuxrocks.com/Docs/Merkey_v_Perens-1.pdf but it should be http://sco.tuxrocks.com/Docs/Merkey_v_Perens/Merkey_v_Perens-1.pdf.
