Locking old discussions? (4.28 / 7) (#2)

I had zeroed some of the spam that came through on Saturday and Sunday.  The bulk of it (and today's) were on older threads/stories.

Is it possible/advisable to lock old stories?  I mean, if someone wanted to respond to a point, they could always start a diary.  Plus, if there comment was good enough to get responses, it is more likely to be seen if it is in a new diary/story.

If you were going to automate it (if SCOOP will let you), you could try:

  1.  No comments after two weeks.

  2.  No comments after the posting level drops off.  (Don't count 0'd posts as when examining the posting level.)  So, if you are still getting an average of say a post a day, it stays live, but if it drops below that, then lock it.

I'm sure there are other possibilities, but I can't see any real advantage to keeping the comments live on the first story here, for example.

Thanks to those of you working on this latest work of the Chinese spambots.  Later this evening, I'll go in and take care of it all via the db (replacing the text instead of deleting).  If I see it continuing, I may have to temporarily turn off anonymous posting so they will perhaps bounce and move on.  So don't panic if that happens - it will be restored.

Most or all comments with the subject line "such a wonderful site"

Most of these have not (at the time of this report) received enough zeros to hide them.

Bye bye spambot (none / 1) (#11)
by Potential Recruit on Mon Nov 27th, 2006 at 11:56:41 EST
This used to be a spambot post that is flooding the site. Due to volume, I had to resort to this while I work to block access by these bots. My apologies - thanks for your patience.
