It was lame.   The 1953 WotW had better special effects.  And acting.  And characterization.  And plot.   Production values generally were totally crappy.   It's one thing to "hold back" early on from displaying your monsters and their malevolent works to increase suspense.   It is totally another when you can't help but suspect that it was done to save budget.   The war machines were so obviously models (stop motion on blue screen? I'm not a SPX freak but it was totally tacky).

Ok the implication (but not clearly stated) of George playing with rabies vaccine was that his injecting the alien somehow had something to do with their demise.   This at least is a theoretical postive action addressing my distaste for existential movies.... But there's a wee bit of a problem in that most of us who had biology in High School understand that vaccines are DEAD virii.

About the only thing I liked about this is that it showed a little bit more of the grittiness of living off the land than one normally finds in such films, but that is **far** from enough to save this.   And again one can suspect that it was cheaper to show an extra 20 minutes of a guy wandering around in dirty clothes and looking for food than it would be to show those 20 minutes of aliens or war.

The real question is why did SciFi bother?  With the Steven Spielberg version out six months ago and spectacularly well done, its more than a minor question.   And given that the product turned out to be a total turd, why did they commit the air time?  Just about anything would have been better.
